Creating a meaningful, personal and profound background for a character is a necessity for truthfulness Onstage or On Camera. In this class the actor will learn to create a psychological background for their character in order to experience the text of a scene or play in a personal and profound way, while serving the author’s intention. Play analysis, monologue work and specific character exercises will be used to explore the deeper meaning of the text and the actor’s role in relation to the author’s larger theme.


REAWAKENING TECHNIQUE (ALUMNI CLASS)

Has it been a while since you have been on the “porch”? Been in an airport lounge waiting for a flight to “St. Croix”? Are you still searching for your “ring”? Are you in a “middle” relationship with your acting? This Alumni Workshop is an opportunity to strengthen technique so you may fully experience your choices under the pressure of repetition. By using monologues and scenes, we will explore where the actor’s skills go during private preparation, so the work is sharp and strong. The goal is to use Script Interpretation, Existing in a Place with Behavior, Character and a Past, Justification and an Acting Score to find truth, relaxation and freedom in the writer’s material. This course is designed for alumni who have already completed the studio’s Acting Technique curriculum.


DECODING THE TEXT

The purpose of this class is to give you specific, dynamic skills to help add variety, power, comedy, drama, depth and color to your readings and performances for stage and screen. From initial cold readings to dynamic rehearsals and unforgettable performances, you will learn to respond to what is on the page, and perform complex language with a variety of new techniques. These essential tools for actors will help you to navigate the deft changes in thought and feeling that acting requires. In this class, you will work on assigned, short pieces of text, drawn from Shakespeare, modern films, and television scripts, that will challenge you to make brilliant, surprising choices that will delight your casting directors, your directors, your scene partners, and your audiences. All levels welcome.

This intermediate level class is an “immersion” experience in the techniques necessary to work in feature film as well as in television dramas and comedies. During this time, opportunities for auditions and showcases are being presented online, and it is important for actors to present themselves in a memorable and engaging way through their self tapes. This class will teach actors the elements of a good selftape and will help build their confidence on how they present themselves to the virtual industry. After learning the fundamentals, students will be receiving feedback from a Casting Director, Show Runner, or Writer.

VOICE OVER 101

Taught by VO Instructor Bruce Kronenberg, Voice Over 101 is the most comprehensive voice over training you can get in New York City.  Covering every genre of VO (Radio Commercials, Television Commercials, Audiobook and Narration and Animation), learn how to use your new skills to make money.  The final class covers the Business of the Voice Over Business. Students receive MP3 files of their weekly work.


SOUND INTO ACTION: VOICE & MONOLOGUE

This class is a unique hybrid of voice and speech, language and text, and acting technique. One hour of voice exercises, followed by two hours of monologue work. Each actor will leave the class with fully realized, contrasting classical & contemporary speeches to add to their monologue portfolio.


BUILDING AN ACCENT

This class will both review the fundamentals of accent work, as well as prepare actors to take charge of their own accent process. Each actor will come away with a strong foundation in an often-requested contemporary accent (ex: British, US Southern, etc.) as well as with a breakdown of an accent of their own choosing, to respond to their personal casting needs. Prior speech training is a plus, though no experience in accent work or IPA training is required!

This four-week workshop will provide the foundational tools to modify your accent to suit your speech needs. The work will largely focus on adjusting non-English accents on U.S. American English toward a sound that is more ‘generally American’. The curriculum utilizes group exploration and individual practice and feedback to help you target and adjust specific sounds that signal your unique accent. The workshop will also explore broader pitch, rhythm, flow, and oral posture adjustments for US American English. In addition to the growth you’ll experience in this four-week workshop, the skills acquired will empower you to develop your speech skills and accent modification on your own, beyond the workshop environment.

I, TOO, SPEAK IN COLOR

In this workshop, BIPOC students will explore the work of William Shakespeare and employ practical, active, grounded application of acting and language technique to bring it to bold life. We will discuss the history of Shakespearean actors of color and keep the path clear for a future of Shakespearean actors of color. In a learning environment designed to be comprised of people and minds of color, we will seek to strip away the Euro-centric Shakespearean lens, through which BIPOC actors have often felt intimidated and alienated. By fostering a space for comfort and ownership for the actor of color In Shakespeare, we will help to paint colorful life onto the words of Shakespeare!


SHAKESPEARE MONOLOGUE WORKSHOP

Shakespeare festivals and theatre companies always look for actors with classical chops. In this four week course, students will learn the fundamentals of verse and how to apply them to their monologue. Students will learn how to shape a monologue so that it has texture and character and clarity. Students will also learn what auditors are looking for, and how to make the audition experience one that they can control. In each class, students will share their monologues, get feedback on memorized pieces, and learn from watching others. Don’t ever get caught unprepared to show yourself at your best!
